Tierrasanta Elementary offers a well-rounded curriculum that nurtures critical thinking skills and enhances the educational experience for children in grade TK-5th. Our devoted staff, active and supportive parents, and high-achieving students make our school one of the best in San Diego Unified!
Tierrasanta Elementary School is a quality neighborhood school established in 1974. Our student population consists of 35% white students, 30% Hispanic/Latino students, 13% Asian, 7% African American, 14% two or more races, and 1% other. 26% of our students are Socio-economically disadvantaged and 12% of our students have disabilities. 6% of our students are English Learners.
Tierrasanta Elementary is a family friendly, community oriented school through which several generations of families have passed. The principal herself is a TES alumni! Parent involvement is high at Tierrasanta and the active School Foundation raises large amounts of money each year to support the school.
We are pleased to offer a robust Spanish Language Immersion Program in grades K-5. 50% of the day is taught in English and 50% in Spanish. We also maintain our high quality English-only classes for those not interested in the Immersion Program and/or cannot commit to staying at the school for the full 6 years.
We offer many extra-curricular activities for all our students during the school day including weekly music taught by professionals for every 4th and 5th grade student. 4th grade students are playing the recorder this year and 5th grade students will participate in band or orchestra. We also have an active Student Council which runs our school and community recycling program (which brings in funding for our school). The TES science club is open to all 4th and 5th graders and meets weekly at lunch. Additionally, all students at TES may participate in our before school running club (run by a parent volunteer) and many participate with their class at the start of school as well.
We are also proud to share that we have a school Makerspace in which students can design, problem solve, and create solutions to real world problems. Every class participates in lessons in the Makerspace a minimum of every other week!
Our Foundation sponsors the ART Residency Program at TES which consists of a 6-12 week art residency at each grade level taught by professional artists.
Academics at TES are critically important and this year all teachers are using the Benchmark Advance English Language Arts Curriculum and Benchmark Advance for Spanish Language Arts (for students in Spanish Immersion). For math we are part of the SDEM district pilot (San Diego Enhanced Mathematics) and use the Illustrative Math curriculum. Our science program consists of one hour of science weekly taught by a credentialed science teacher in the science lab and three additional hours of STEAM taught by the classroom teacher using the district STEAM units (which follow NGSS standards).
